I've written a full-length play called "Algebra" (a comedy in 5 acts, 112 pages). "Algebra" is a glimpse into the ordinary world of students at the University of Toronto, their friendships and struggles. The story is about loving, desiring to be loved, being disappointed by those you love and being challenged to accept love when it is offered by somebody from whom you are not prepared to accept it. Underlying the play are tensions about religion and secularism, modernity and tradition as well as a celebration of the power of words that may not even come from one's own place and time. It begins with a young man proposing marriage to a young woman and being turned down. The story follows him as he lapses into depression, struggles with friends who don't understand his depression, and finally experiences a breakthrough with the help of somebody from whom he didn't expect it to come. And Ina al rifq ma kan fee shay2in illa zanah wa ma kharaja min shay2in illa shanah." -when gentleness is heeded , beauty radiates in the act , and whenever it's discarded , ugliness radiates in the act .
