Assalamu Alaikum,

Shooot. Gone'head witcha bad self.

Obviously I'm grooving on your writing and agreeing on what you say, but thanks for the op to add my $.02.

The other day I expressed to one of my new friends here in Conservopolis that I'm sick of the 20-year-0ld chick community at my masjid and in our community in general. Because at that point several people were being really... high school. And I got over high school several years ago, in college, thank-you-very-much.

And here my mother complains that all my friends are married women. And for the most part... they kind of are. Mentally, that's where I am. And that's what I'm looking for.

I loved your next post (started there and read backward through the Sister's carnival at Writeous Sister Speaks) because of your remarks on non-convert relatives. How is it that my relatives actively avoid seriously discussing marriage with me... yet are okay with the non-married-sleeping-around-dating folk... this blows my mind.

Anyway. Thank you. Right on. Preach it. I'm with you in the search for not hot but smokin'.

peace

You go, Dave. We're here for you and your quirks, man.

skarim - say what? You don't dig my middle-school thesis?

I think that the whole thing about interestingness is that it *should* be up for grabs, even if it isn't at the moment. Some of us are into poetry, some of us are into philosophy....some of us are into knitting. Or cooking. Or the X-files. Or history. Or whatever. Thing is, you look around at all the "other" people, and they organize themselves successfully in little subcultures - they have different ways of dressing, talking, and things they like that form the basis for smaller communities. As for the Muslims, there isn't that much variety - unless it's along ethnic lines. There's the whole thing about doing good and preventing wrong, but the danger is that it gets....stifling (and here I reveal myself as tragically uncommitted to various causes. Oh well). I just think that we should be able to do those things and then be into what we're into. We are completely socialized to be into/not into certain things - but I think that's the point - and I found this really off-putting about the Muslim community for a long time. Variety is the spice of life, no? We can't press everyone into the same mold even if we'd like to. People have personalities - unavoidably. Walhamdulillah :)

HAHA. so i'm sleep-deprived after finally getting some studying done but this post had me cracking up. so sorry about the junior high guidance-counselor story (aww) but loved the bit about muslims being stuck in junior-high mentality. of course, i disagree, but i will have to argue w/you about this over coffee at cafe a- when i'm not on my way to a meeting ;)

p.s. in the meanwhile: what defines an interesting person anyway? aren't we socialized to accept certain things and be turned off by certain things?
